Scuba diving is truly an adventure and Koh Tao's shallow bays and coves offer excellent conditions for beginners as well as experienced divers. Add to that the absurdly cheap prices for both courses and fun dives and you will understand why Koh Tao has evolved into one of South East Asia's premier diving destinations.
If Koh Tao is a divers mecca, then it's heaven for snorkellers. There are several excellent snorkelling spots on Koh Tao, both for experienced snorkellers and for people just wanting to try it out.
Rocky Bay in particular is famous for it's resident group of small (up to 2 meter) Blacktip Reef Sharks.
Mango Bay, Koh Nang Yuan and Aow Leuk are also top spots for easy snorkelling. A recently wrecked fishing boat in Lighthouse Bay is also worth a try.
Snorkelling is very accessible on Koh Tao. Most resorts rent out snorkelling gear on a pay per day basis. It not uncommon to pay as little as 100 Thai Baht for 24hrs rental. It's even better though, to buy your own gear - it'll save you a great deal of money in the long run and you won't have to bother with leaking masks or fins that give you blisters.
Snorkelling Spot Top 5
1) Rocky Bay for it's reef sharks
2) Mae Haad Beach for it's Shipwreck
3) Shark Island (pictured below, it's the little island just outside the bay!) for it's beautiful coral gardens (but beware of the current!)
4) Mango Bay for it's crystal clear water and friendly fish
5) Sairee Beach for it's accessibility and shallow crystaline waters
Koh Tao offers experienced and unexperienced paddlers alike fantastic Sea Kayaking. It's such a small island that it is actually possible to kayak all the way around it in less than a day. So load up the kayak and just take it for a paddle to one of the beautiful protected coves or bays and combine the kayaking with a bit of snorkelling or scuba diving.
There are several places to rent good quality single or double ocean kayaks on Koh Tao. A good option is to make your way to Coral Grand Resort, which is on the far end of Sairee Beach - making your crossing to Koh Nang Yuan or Mango Bay that much easier.

Koh Tao offers experienced and unexperienced climbers alike fantastic rock climbing. The whole island is virtually full of big boulders that can be scaled safely.
Sadly, at the moment there is no outfit on Koh Tao doing instruction or guided climbing, so you'll need to bring your own climbing gear to have a good time with the rocks.
To all the rock climbing instructors out there: come to Koh Tao - there a great opportunity to setup a rock climbing business.
