The spa we know today had its origin in Bali where, for centuries, healing water and therapeutic massage were part of the
Balinese daily life.
With the tourist boom of the 80s, this local Hindu culture become a dedicated business under the name Mandara Spa.
In no time it was all over the world repackaged as a chic art of wellness.
As a resort island often compared to Bali, Phuket is naturally expected to be another spa haven. Indeed it is, though it become one only during
the last decade or so. Thai massage may have been around for centuries. But spa, at least until recently, had nothing to do with massage.
Or even with herbs, mud, wraps, peel-off masks and other skin-cleansing agents. The word, in fact, was simply the abbreviation for
Sanum Per Aqua, Greek for health through water.
Spa come to Thailand in 1993-1994 with the opening of the Oriental Spa at the Banyan Tree Spa in Phuket, and Chiva-Som in Hua Hin,
according to Naphalai Areesorn of The Thai Spa Association. The idea blended perfectly with the country's natural healing arts tradition,
natural springs, and the abundance of medicinal flora.
Today, the concept has expanded to include modern health resorts. In Samui alone, you can find contemporary spas catering to people who want
to lose weight, get in shape, simply relax, or luxuriate with pampering treatments.
They offer all elements needed for a healthy lifestyle, including nutrition, fitness activities, body treatments, medical evaluations,
behavioral management counseling, stress management, holistic health, spiritual growth, movement therapy, exercise physiology and more.
Most hotels and resorts in the city have their own in-house spas, although stand-alone spas are also all over the place.
